The gold swift is a widespread species found in Europe and Asia, including Japan. Moths of the Hepialidae are considered to be primitive moths; they do not have a proboscis and are unable to feed. The female deposits the eggs in flight, and the larvae feed on bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), mainly internally until fully grown, when they feed on young shoots. Gold swift courtship and mating is spectacular.
