Paplitęs didžiojoje Europos dalyje, Rusijoje iki pat Tolimųjų Rytų, Kaukaze, Irane. Patino kūnas 35–40 mm ilgio, sparnai gelsvi, su ryškiu tašku viduryje. Patelės besparnės, neskraido, balsvos, su juodomis dėmelėmis. Vikšrai pavasarį graužia medžių lapus (klevus, lazdynus, ąžuolus, bukus, uosius, kriaušes, drebules, guobas, vyšnias, liepas, beržus, obelis ir kt.). Suaugėliai skraido rudenį, iki pat užsningant.
