It lives throughout the Palearctic zone and is commonly found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The common brimstone undergoes some regional migration between hibernation and breeding areas throughout the year. It has one generation per year and hibernates as an adult. Larvae appear to only feed on two plant sources: the alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) and the common buckthorn (Rhamnus carthartica). It is commonly believed that the word 'butterfly' is derived from 'butter-coloured fly' which is attributed to the common brimstone.
