Male hind femora have a large projection

The smaller (wing length 6mm) than similar Panurgus banksianus. The antennae are partly orange in both sexes and the male hind femora have a large projection on the underside half way along. Nesting occurs in sandy ground, including well-trodden footpaths and sand faces, often in colonies. Pollen is obtained from yellow Asteraceae, particularly Cat's-ear, hawkbeards and Autumn Hawk's-bit. Adults fly from June until August but tend to peak a few weeks later than P. calcaratus, though the two species often fly alongside each other.
