It is a lithophyte (grows on rocks), and is found growing in the moss on old walls, cliffs, cracks in rocks, and in rocky undergrowth; also as an epiphyte on mossy trees.

Auga miškuose, pasitaiko atvirose vietose ant kelmų ir medžių kamienų, mūrinių tvorų plyšiuose, pašlaitėse. Toleruoja sausros periodus. Sporifikuoja balandžio – rugsėjo mėnesiais. Lietuvoje apyretė, auga nedidelėmis grupėmis.
