Widespread in the Palearctic, from northern Italy and France to central Sweden, eastwards from Eastern Europe to Siberia. Body oval, shiny, smooth. Head yellow in front, black in back. Pronotum yellow with a large, black spot at the base; this spot reaches half the length of the pronotum. Elytra black with yellow longitudinal stripes, lightly outlined at the outer edges. Excellent swimmer and flyer. Adults and larvae are predatory. Habitat: small, overgrown bodies of water, most often shallow puddles and backwaters.
