It is native to Europe, but is also widespread in temperate regions of Asia and North Africa. A sprawling perennial wildflower, with slender, spreading stems and narrowly oval-shaped, slightly hairy green short stalked leaves. A climber that winds itself through shrubs and hedges near water sources. Slightly nodding, bell-shaped flowers, with a pale green outer casing and narrow, divided white petals, are produced in summer. Berry initially light green, turning black, 6-8 mm.
