A large, shiny black cranefly with yellow markings. Males have comb-like antennae. This species is usually confined to old deciduous woodland, orchards, and other habitats where dying and fallen trees are found. Saproxylophagous larvae develop in fallen trees or in hollows of deciduous trees.
