Augalas daugiametis, iki 1 m aukščio. Auga šlapiose vietose, pelkėse, pievose, grioviuose. Žydi birželio – liepos mėn. Žiedai sutelkti varputės pavidalo žiedynuose. Stiebas status, jo viršūnė dažniausiai nulinkusi.
