It is found in North and Central Europe, Russia, Mongolia, China. Habitat. Body length 6-11 mm. It lives on water banks, peat bogs. Adults feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae are saprophagous and develop in the muddy banks rather than in the water.
The eyes have a burgundy-purple transverse stripe: in females, the eyes are separated by the frons, while in males, they meet. The scutum is coppery-black or black with partially erect, short setae. The sides of the thorax are covered with yellow and white hairs. The scutellum is uniformly black with a pair of spine-like projections of yellow-brown coloration. The abdomen is sparsely haired, black, with relatively narrow, light bands on the posterior tergites composed of matted hairs. The knob of the halteres is white or pale yellow. The antennae are black.
Similar species: In Odontomyia tigrina, there are no light bands on the posterior margins of the abdomen, while in Odontomyia argentata, these bands are wider, and the male’s abdomen is covered with dense, silvery hairs.
