The males usually sit in treetops, they are rarely found on flowers. The females can be found on felled hardwood. The larvae develop in deadwood and diseased wood of many different deciduous trees, e.g. in oak , beech , elm , birch , willow , hazel, etc. The females lay their eggs in a bitten furrow. The larvae that hatch from this need two to three years to develop.
