The species is widespread in Europe. In the north, it is found as far as southern Scandinavia and central England, in the south as far as the northern Balkan Peninsula, and in the east as far as Kazakhstan. It was introduced into North America. Otiorhynchus raucus is associated with disturbed ground, especially on loose sandy soils and the species appears to prefer loose sandy or chalky soils. It is phytophagous and polyphagous. The larvae feed on the roots of plants while adults tend to be found at the base of plants and in litter.

The pronotum and elytra are strongly curved and spherical. The elytra hairy and have clay-yellow spots. The elytra suture is curved like a keel in the rear area. The pronotum is always darker than the elytra.
