It is found in most of Europe, except Ireland, Norway, Belgium, the Iberian Peninsula and the western and southern part of the Balkan Peninsula.
One of the more distinctive Yponomeuta, showing a patch of greyish suffusion in the centre of the forewing and another smaller patch at the base. The larvae feed on spindle (Euonymus europaeus) in a silken web, but unlike some other Yponomeuta species, are not so gregarious.
