Cap 5 to 12 cm in diameter and hemispherical when young, becoming more or less flat or slightly depressed in the centre when fully developed. The gills very brittle, initially cream, darken with age and develop rust spots. Stem 15 to 40mm in diameter and 4 to 8cm tall, white, brittle and solid, staining brownish and developing internal cavities as they age.
Initially with a rancid oily smell that with age becomes more like rotting fish; the taste is also unpleasant and rather acrid, especially the gills. Stinking russula is widely considered inedible. In Eastern Europe it is sometimes used for traditional mushroom pickles after being soaked in water for several days to remove the strong taste.
Kepurėlė 7 – 12 cm skersmens, jaunų vaisiakūnių beveik rutuliška, senų paplokščia, retkarčiais truputį įdubęs vidurys, gleivėta, geltonai ruda ar nešvarios ochrinės spalvos, kraštai užsilenkę žemyn, vagoti. Lakšteliai pilki, gelsvi, su bespalvio skysčio lašeliais, kuriems išdžiūvus atsiranda dėmės, tankūs, priaugtiniai. Kotas 5 – 10 cm ilgio, 2 – 3 cm storio, balkšvas, plaušuotas, taškuotas. Trama balsva, po luobele rusvai gelsva, stangri, trapi, deginančio skonio. Auga liepos – spalio mėnesiais spygliuočių ir lapuočių miškuose, ypač beržynuose, ąžuolynuose. Lietuvoje visur paplitusi, tinka sūdymui.
