It is found in Europe, northeastern North America, northern Asia. It associates with birch trees and is typically found in boggy or swampy areas, often growing among sphagnum moss. Although the fruitbodies are edible, opinions vary as to their culinary desirability.
Vaisiakūniai nedideli. Kepurėlė 3–7 cm skersmens, jauna – pusiau apvali, vėlaiu – išgaubtai paplokščia, pilkšva, dažniausiai gelsvai melsvo ar žalio atspalvio. Vamzdeliai balti. Kotas 7–10 (12)×1–2 (3) cm, kepurėlės spalvos, plaušuotas žvynuotas. Trama balta, įpjovus spalva nesikeičia. Auga pelkėtose pušynuose su beržo priemaiša, paliose. Valgomas, neretas.
