This species is present in Europe, the East Palearctic realm (China and Japan), the Near East, and the Nearctic realm. Adults feed on nectar, pollen and excrements, love sun bathing. Larvae are associated with bird’s nests and feed on bird droppings.
Female eyes separated by a broad forehead and male eyes by a narrow forehead. On the scutum two spots in front of the thoracic suture, a long central spot and unbroken lateral spots reaching the wing base. On the scutellum two black lateral spots; the grey central stripe in both sexes reaches and touches the anterior and posterior edges of the scutellum. Tergites with black spots at the posterior edges. Legs black.
