It is found in the Palearctic, including Europe, and North Africa. Oval black body, black-haired – grey-white hairs appear in much smaller numbers. At the posterior angles of the pronotum and in the middle of the base of the pronotum a short shroud of red hairs. Scutellum reddish-yellow hairs. Underside of abdomen chalky white. Thighs dark, without light rings. Antennae brown-red.
Adults and larvae feed on dried carrion of vertebrates, dead invertebrates and organic remains of animal origin. Adults also eat invertebrate egg deposits.
