It is widespread in Europe and can be found on carrion, although not associated with any specific stages of decomposition. Pollenia vagabunda has also been found in North America. There is no obvious habitat preference. The larvae are presumed to attack worms, as in other clusterflies.
This is a slim, long-legged, long-winged clusterfly with a dark median stripe at the front of the thorax (more obvious in males). The shifting markings of the tergites also differ from other species in that an almost complete dark band occurs across the bases of tergites 3-5 (apparent tergites 2-4) from some angles of view.
