It is found in Europe and Northern Asia (excluding China) and North America. Medium-sized, spring-flying Andrena barbilabris is strongly associated with loose, dry sandy soils. Females have a dense and long reddish-brown pile on top of the thorax. The abdomen is sparsely hairy and shiny with weak hair fringes on the hind margins of tergites 2-4. The facial fovea are very pale. The small-headed build and particularly oval abdomen.
The slimmer males tend to look silvery in the field due to the long white hairs on the sides of the thorax. Like males of argentata they have the 3rd antennal segment longer than the 4th and the hind margin of tergite 1 has longitudinal creases on its surface.
