phoretic mite on the pronotum
Black head and elytra, with a shiny appearence. The pronotum is predominantly red, with a black marking extending in a solid ‘V’ shape from the anterior margin to around one third of the way down. Distinct longitudinal rows are visible running the length of the e lytra. The legs are mostly black, becoming browner towards the tarsi and on the tarsal claws. Antennae are black and are fairly long, extending just beyond the posterior margin of the pronotum. Larvae are associated with rotting stumps and trunks of pine (Pinus). Predatory larvae develop in dry pine decay, less often in oak and birch decay.
