It is found throughout Europe and in Asia to eastern Siberia. The young larvae are gregarious, becoming solitary later. The older larva is very striking, black with white and yellow lines. It feeds on deciduous trees and bushes, mainly oak, lime, willow, poplar, hornbeam, as well as beech, birch, hazel and alder. The species overwinters as a pupa in the soil in a light cocoon.
