Distribution: Europe, Turkey, Caucasus, Russia (Europe to Middle Siberia). These spiders are typically found on spruce and pine trees, under bark, in moor- and heathland, and around buildings. On average, females have body length 7.5–14mm, males 6–8.1mm. Both sexes are coloured grey to brown. The whole spider has a furry appearance and is flattened in shape. Prosoma greyish brown to dark brown and covered with light grey hairs. Legs mottled or ringed like the forebody and with light hairs. Opisthosoma mottled medium brown and reddish brown, sometimes blackish, with pale spots. The pattern may be composed of bands of colour or chevrons and is quite variable.
