Native to central and southern Europe, from Portugal and France north to the Netherlands and the Baltic States, east to the Caucasus, and also southwestern Asia in Turkey. The species has few pests or diseases outside its native range and is widely naturalized as a result and can be invasive. It forms dense and extensive mats along the forest floor.
Stiebas 30-60 cm aukščio, gulsčias ar šliaužiantis. Lapai odiški, kiaušiniški, 3-5 cm ilgio ir 1,5-2,5 cm pločio. Žiedai pavieniai, pažastiniai. Vainikėlis mėlynas. Žydi balandžio – gegužės mėn. Auginamas darželiuose ir kapinėse kaip dekoratyvinis augalas, bet plinta miškuose savaime.
