It occurs throughout boreal regions of Europe and Asia but is absent from eastern North America. It is a small herbaceous perennial plant with one or more whorls of leaves on a single slender erect stem. The pollinators are rarely seen at its flowers. The seeds rarely develop and hardly ever germinate among the crowded plants. The species propagates more efficiently through its runners.
