This species is present in most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, and the Near East. Chrysops caecutiens preferably live in shaded marshlands and in damp woodlands.

The forehead and face of the female are partly dusted with yellow – never completely black. Female: sides of the first two tergites are yellow. Tergites 3-7 without yellow bands. On the 2nd tergite there is a black, inverted V reaching the posterior edge of the tergite. Legs in both sexes completely black or almost completely black in the male.
