The so-called green veins on the underside of adults are, in fact, an illusion created by a subtle combination of yellow and black scales.
The eggs are laid mostly on wild Brassicaceae, such as hedge mustard (
Sisymbrium officinale), garlic mustard (
Alliaria petiolate), cuckooflower (
Cardamine pratensis), water-cress (
Nasturtium officinale), charlock (
Sinapis arvensis), large bitter-cress (
Cardamine amara), wild cabbage (
Brassica oleracea), and wild radish (
Raphanus raphanistrum), and so it is rarely a pest in gardens or field crops. The pupa overwinters.
