It is a Palearctic species with a limited distribution in Europe. The male with a silvery-grey abdomen. Females are a drabber brown with feint bands across the tergites and stripes down the thorax. Both sexes are readily separated from other therevids by the swollen, bristly first antennal segments. The wings have subtly clouded cross-veins. Adults fly from May to July. The larvae are presumed to develop as predators among plant roots.
