Capsus ater likely originated in North America, but that is now found in Europe and across the Palearctic to Siberia and in North America. It is found in grasslands, where it is associated with numerous species of Poaceae. Unlike most capsid bugs, it feeds low down on the stems, rather than on flower spikes and developing grains.
