It is found in Europe, predominantly in late spring and beginning of summer. Usually yellow-brown or orange-yellow, strongly bristled springtail with two longitudinal lines on the body, darker than the background. However, several colored forms are known. Thus, in the colored form melanocephala , the head, part of the trunk and the fourth segment of the abdomen are black. Individuals with weak body pigment are white.

Orchesella flavescens can be found in forests, parks, gardens, thickets; it generally lives on herbaceous plants or directly on moist soil. Occasionally found in meadows. Body length 4-5 mm. Feeds on algae, mycelium hyphae, dead organic matter.
