The adults prey on insects such as sawflies and ichneumons. The larvae are presumed to develop in woodland soil or rotting wood. Relatively large species with conspicuously long, dark wings that have violet reflections in some lights. The legs are reddish except for the tarsi and tips of the tibiae. The top of the thorax is only inconspicuously striped but the sides have a U-shaped silvery strip. Females up to 18 mm long.
