The primary ancestor of most cultivars of the domesticated apple is Malus sieversii - a wild apple native to the mountains of Central Asia in southern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Xinjiang (China). Recent cultivars have significant influx of genes from Malus sylvestris.
