Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants. The genus is native to northeast Asia. While usually grown for ornamental purposes, they are grown as vegetables in some Asian cultures. Taxonomists differ on the number of Hosta species; there may be as many as 45. Mosta Hosta species can hybridise.
