It grows in sunny, rocky or brushy places in more or less mineral rich soils at an altitude of 0–400 m above sea level.
Auginamas darželiuose, bet randamas ir sulaukėjęs. Mėgsta kalkingas dirvas. Žydi liepos – rugpjūčio mėn. Žiedai balti ar melsvi. Sėklose susikaupia iki 25 proc. aliejaus. Augalas medingas, turi daug nektaro ir žiedadulkių.
