Vienmečiai ir daugiamečiai žoliniai augalai, retai krūmai. Stiebas su ryškiai pastorėjusiais bambliais. Lapai paprasti, jų pamatuose tarpusavyje suaugę prielapiai sudaro makštį (lot. ochrea), kuri gaubia apatinę stiebo tarpubamblio dalį. Žiedai smulkūs, dažniausiai susibūrę šluotelės, kekės ar varpos pavidalo žiedynuose. Vaisius – riešutėlis.
