- Ephemera luteus
- yellow mayfly
- wyskór złocisty
They occur in most of Europe and temperate zone of Asia. Adults are large with a dull yellow-orange body and a distinctive broad yellow-brown stripe along the length of the abdomen. The body length is approximately 13 mm (excluding tail). Females are slightly larger than males, but are lighter in color and have smaller, brown eyes. The eyes of males are large and green. Subimago differ from fully mature forms mainly in their dark wings. The mouthparts are reduced because the imago does not feed. The larvae (nymphs) living in water reach a length of 14-18 mm.
Nymphs live 1-3 years at the bottom of clean flowing waters, they prefer larger, not too fast rivers. The nymphs feed mainly on algae. Because they are poor swimmers, they live attached to or under large rocks. The last stage of the nymph goes above the water and, having attached itself to the plant, transforms into a subimago, and only later into sexually mature individuals. Adults appear in large numbers on river banks from June to August. They fly mainly after dusk, spending the day on coastal plants.
