Beris chalybata occurs in a wide range of habitats, but perhaps especially moist or shaded woodland and other areas with trees and shrubs. It can tolerate quite urbanised settings. Adults are found from April to September. They peak in May and June. Adults are most frequently seen on foliage but will also visit flowers such as umbellifers. The saproxylic larvae found in decaying dead leaves and wood debris. The larvae have been reared from mosses, compost and other rotting vegetation.
Wings glassy, in the male strongly darkened. Eyes in the male connected, in the female separated by a relatively wide forehead. Scutum metallic dark green, darkly hairy. Scutellum armed with 6 black, thick spines. Thighs and shins yellow; hind feet of the male thickened. It is one of dark-bodied species with pale legs lacking any blackish areas on the femorae and tibiae. Females tend to have clean orange legs; those of the males tend to be a dusky orange and may appear dark in certain lights. B. morrisii by contrast is larger, with paler yellow legs and a brighter green thorax.
