It is found in the Palearctic and has been introduced to North America. Hydrophoria lancifer is a hairy beige-brown fly, body length 4 - 11 mm. The wings are yellowish at the base. The flies can be found from April to August on the edges of forests, in clearings or in hedgerows feeding on pollen and nectar. The larvae develop in dung.
