Palearctic, European species. This insect inhabits areas with light, preferably sandy soils, including sea and inland water coasts, pine forests with sparse vegetation, fallow lands, ruderal areas or human settlements. The larvae live in sandy soil, feeding on small roots.
A beetle with an oval body, 5 to 7.5 mm long, and dark brown to black in color. The body surface is covered with oval scales of silvery, silvery-greenish, metallic greenish or golden-green in color, initially arranged relatively densely, but wearing off over time. The surface of the head is granularly dotted and covered with short, protruding hairs.
