A Palearctic insect, known from almost all European countries. To the east it reaches through the Caucasus, Iran and China to Japan. A fly with a body length of 12 to 14 mm. Its antennae are black. The eyes are characterized by brown-black hair. The male's face is black, while the female's has yellow spots on the sides. The shield is black with a yellow rear edge and yellow spines. The top of the abdomen is shiny black, without spots or stripes. The underside of the abdomen has a yellow base spot and yellow rear edges of the sternites. The larvae inhabit fresh and brackish waters.
