It is found throughout North America and Europe. Larvae are saproxylobiontes, rot eaters - they live under the bark of pines and spruces, where they eat wood overgrown with fungi.
Female eyes separated by the forehead, male eyes connected. Darkly colored, slender saproxylophagous hoverfly with a largely red abdomen. Hind thigh without a tuft of light hairs.
Similar: Xylota segnis with a partially orange abdomen, but tipped with black, and light, not dark shins. Very similar is the more massive Brachypalpoides lentus, differing in a distinct tuft of light hairs on the hind thigh.
