The species occurs in the Palearctic. It is widespread in Europe. In the east, the distribution area extends to the Far East.
Readily distinguished from other predominantly black Macrophya species by the yellow wing stigmas. Females are particularly striking due to the yellow costa/subcosta and yellow-tinted wing menbranes, combined wtth a conspicuous pale yellow scutellum and humeral spots, a white lower face, large white spots on the hind coxae, white lateral spots on tergites 4-6, a white tergite 8, mostly white front and mid tibiae and white banded hind tibiae. The smaller and less striking males have less extensive pale markings and a completely black scutellum and hind legs. The wing membranes lack a yellow tint and the wings have a darker wing costa/subcosta.
The rarer Macrophya albicincta and Macrophya alboannulata are also very similar, but their head is rather shiny rather than matte – the white spot on the hind coxa and the white spots on the abdomen are smaller or entirely absent.
