It is a Palearctic species of sawfly. Host plants: Alnus; Betula pendula; Salix aurita, caprea, viminalis. Larvae free on the leaves.
Females can be distinguished from those of other Trichiosoma species by the well-defined, extensively reddish lateral areas on the tergites and reddish sternites. The tibiae are reddish and the tarsi orange. Males are less distinctive and rather resemble those of Trichiosoma laterale but have more extensive reddish sides to the abdomen.
The caterpillar-like larvae are green with lots of small pale spots and a pale green head capsule. They feed on willow foliage. Photos of larvae and adults can be seen here: insectamo.ru/new/25-pililshchiki/2372-trichiosoma-vitellina. The adults fly in May and June.
