Coloration very variable, there are pure black, almost completely red and black specimens with three indicated red bands. It feeds on aphids, caterpillars and other small insects and their larvae. The females lay their eggs on deciduous trees between June and August, and the eggs overwinter. The larvae hatch from around the end of April - beginning of May of the following year. Depending on the weather, adults can be found from the beginning of June to the beginning of August.
