Length 4 to 7 mm. A black fly with shiny black thorax. The head and legs are both very hairy. Female legs are ochreous. Males have black femora but with the hind tibia and tarsi brown. The male has a very prominent dark stigma in each wing, and the lower parts of the legs are orange. Breeds in soil and sometimes seen in swarms. The larvae develop in the litter layer. They feed on decomposing organic matter.
