A distinctive species being 6 to 7mm long with a black pronotum, and having the base of tibiae and mandibles red. The pronotum is deeply notched at the hind angles and coarsely punctate throughout. Each elytron has three slightly raised lines.
Adults are diurnal and may be found among herbaceous vegetation and on trees and shrubs in suitable situations, they are predaceous but during warm spells they visit umbels and other flowers where they have been observed feeding on pollen, they are fly readily and in warm weather may occasionally occur far from suitable habitats. Little is known of the species biology but larvae are typical of the family, they are predaceous, terrestrial and occur in much the same habitats as the adults, they develop through the summer and probably overwinter in the soil or among litter and pupate in the spring.
