This species is widespread in Europe, in Asia, and in the Nearctic realm. These beetles inhabit mountain areas, coniferous forests, dry forest edges and forest meadows, but also heathland, moors, dunes and gardens. Adults can be found from May to early August, feeding on flowers, shrubs and low vegetation. Larvae of this species live in tree stumps of conifers and in humus. They are predators and destroy cocoons of pine-tree lappet (Dendrolimus pini) and pine sawfly (Neodiprion).
9-11mm. Distinctive symmetrical patterns produced by dense creamy-yellow pubescence which almost covers the dorsal surface, in places this runs obliquely and sometimes perpendicular to the elytral suture. They are rather similar to Agrypnus murinus, that is smaller.
Kūnas 9 – 12 mm. Platus, plokščias, tamsiai rudas arba juodas. Viršus apaugęs tankiais, šilkiškais, gelsvais arba pilkšvais plaukeliais, kurie sudaro dėmėtą margą piešinį. Vabalai skraido gegužės – liepos mėnesiais. Aptinkami ant įvairių augalų. Lietuvoje dažna rūšis. Lervos grobuoniškos ir fitosaprofaginės (minta pūvančiu augaliniu maistu), vystosi miško dirvožemyje, rečiau trūnijančioje medienoje.
