Medium-sized, usually brownish, often heavily haired spring flies. The innermost segments of the antennae are elongated, longer than the head, with long hairs. The male's maxillary palps consist of only two or three segments, are club-shaped and heavily hairy. The forewings are relatively broad and rounded. The forelegs have two spurs, the middle and hind legs have four.
The larvae of this family can be found in both still and flowing fresh water. They feed on dead plant debris. The larvae build a house of plant debris, which is square in cross-section in most species.
