Ciliate Cordilura

A particularly large, shining black Cordilura with relatively long, all-black legs. There is a silvery-white stripe at the front of the thoracic dorsum behind the head, and silvery-white dusting on the face and jowls, on the front coxae, and on the sternopleuri above the mid coxae. These dusted areas can be particularly conspicuous when the insect is seen from the front. The wings are strongly yellow-tinted at the base and have yellow veins. The third antennal segment has a particularly long bristle on its outer face. Males have conspicuous fringes of yellow hairs under the front femora and on the posterior surface of the mid tibiae. The shape of their apically-splayed surstyli is very different to other Cordilura species. C. picipes is the only other Cordilura with completely black legs but is much smaller, less shiny, and lacks a long bristle on the third antennal segment. Cordilura picipes can be distinguished by having only one pair of bristles on the scutellum. Cordilura ciliata has two pairs.
