Widespread throughout the Palaearctic. Flies from March to September. The larvae of Tipula lateralis are semi aquatic and feed on rotting plants on the bottom of the ponds or streams.
The head is light gray with a dark, sometimes faintly marked spot between the eyes. On the scutum, there is a thin, black or dark brown longitudinal line set against a grayish central stripe—an important diagnostic feature of the species. The abdomen has a distinctive coloration, with lightened areas on the center of the tergites forming a broad central band that contrasts sharply with the dark lateral sides of the tergites. The wings have dark venation. The area around the pterostigma is darkened, with a diffuse, luminous streak running across the wing below it.
